Winona Forest Tourathon includes Walter Chapman 50 K
The Winona Forest Tourathon (formerly the Tug Hill Tourathon) is a Nordic Ski Race that has been held in Winona State Forest and surrounding area for the past 32 years. The length and specific course has varied over the years. Currently, the event is held on a dedicated event loop in Winona State Forest, starting at the CCC Camp on County Route 90 in Mannsville, NY. Skiers can elect to race 12.5, 25, 37.5, or now a dedicated 50 kilometers. We formally announce the prominent return of the 50 kilometer segment of the race and it will be named the “Walter Chapman 50 K”. This segment of the Tourathon is dedicated in memory of the late Walter Chapman- a lifetime Nordic Skiing Enthusiast and a Tourathon participant for many years who has instilled the love of skiing over several generations of his family.
Furthermore, we formally announce that a distinguished award will be bestowed upon the oldest finisher of the 50 kilometer segment. The Walter Chapman Award symbolizes determination, extreme fitness, and love for Nordic skiing. Walter Chapman passed away in 2012 surrounded by family comprising of 14 Tourathon skiers. He was an original Army 10th Mountain Division soldier skiing in WWII. And- the last time Chappy finished the 50 K segment of the Tourathon, he was 79 years old.
The Winona Forest Tourathon is being held Saturday, February 23, 2013.
Interested in trying one loop of the course? A Try-It Race will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013.
