More than 50 racers started 2017 off with a cross country ski race. And Mother Nature did not disappoint by delivering overnight new snow at Bristol Mountain Nordic Center and McCauley Mountain Ski Area, Old Forge.
RXCSF Racing New Year’s race, the first in their Poronkusema Series, drew 28 junior, open and masters racers. Precise Swiss Timing shows that Leah Shaffer edged out Miles Mattern (both in U12 Class) in the 3K freestyle race by 0.4 seconds to win at 12:04.3. Third place win went to Braden Bellizzi with a time of 12:37.3.
Similarly, in the 6K freestyle, Connor Green (U23) melted snowflakes by 0.3 seconds in front of Matt Bellizzi (M3) for the winning time of 16:46.8. Ryan Young (U20) was third at 17:44.4. Top girl’s honors went to Grace Mattern (U14) with 20:03.8 and women’s winner was Kellin King at 21:37.6. See complete results HERE.
In the Western Adirondacks, 20 racers turned out for Polar Bear Ski Club’s Resolution Day 5K race at McCauley Mountain. The drive to Old Forge from Peru might have been a challenge for Stanley Hatch (M6) but the 5K race course was a “piece of cake/cookie” as demonstrated by his time of 17 minutes even. Overall second place went to Polar Bear’s Tyler Rudolph (U18) at 17:43, third to Megan Greene (U20) with 18:12 followed by HURT’s Ed Luban (M7) at 18:19 and Rob Hinsdill (M3) at 18:34. See complete results HERE.

In the BKYSL race, all racers finished high enough on the podium for a lollipop and cookies!
A Polar Bear Biathlon Club race earlier in the day drew 20 competitors. See the New York Biathlon blog of this event and results.
